Adrenal PCOS
Adrenal PCOS is characterized by elevated levels of the androgen DHEA-S, which is produced by the adrenal glands rather than the ovaries, affecting approximately 20-30% of women with PCOS. This type is particularly sensitive to stress, as emotional and physical stress signals the adrenal glands to release higher levels of cortisol and DHEA-S, worsening hormonal imbalance. Women with adrenal PCOS often benefit more from stress management strategies, adequate sleep, gentle exercise, and adaptogenic supplements than from insulin-focused interventions alone, as their primary driver differs from the more common insulin-resistant presentation.
