Prediabetes
Prediabetes is a metabolic state where blood sugar levels are elevated above normal (fasting glucose 100-125 mg/dL or HbA1c 5.7-6.4%) but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Up to 40% of women with PCOS have prediabetes, and the condition can progress rapidly to full diabetes without intervention. The Androgen Excess and PCOS Society recommends that all women with PCOS undergo regular glucose tolerance testing to detect prediabetes early, as lifestyle modifications including dietary changes, regular physical activity, and weight management can often prevent or significantly delay the progression to type 2 diabetes.
