Letrozole
Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor that has become the recommended first-line fertility medication for women with PCOS, surpassing the older standard of clomiphene based on superior ovulation and live birth rates demonstrated in major clinical trials. It works by temporarily blocking estrogen production, which prompts the pituitary gland to release more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and stimulate egg development. Typically taken as a daily pill for five days during the early menstrual cycle, letrozole tends to produce fewer multiple pregnancies than clomiphene and has a lower risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, making it a safer and more effective option for PCOS-related infertility.
