Ovarian Cyst
An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops in or on an ovary, with most being benign functional cysts that form naturally during the menstrual cycle and resolve on their own within one to three months. Despite the name 'polycystic ovary syndrome,' the small follicles seen on PCOS ultrasounds are not true pathological cysts but rather immature follicles that have stalled in development due to hormonal imbalances. True ovarian cysts—such as large functional cysts, dermoid cysts, or endometriomas—can occur independently of PCOS and may cause pain, pressure, or complications if they rupture or grow significantly.
